Walter T. Foster was an American entrepreneur, artist, art instructor, writer, editor and publisher. His line of low-cost art manuals was widely distributed through art stores, often displayed in a metal rack specially designed for the oversized Foster format. While based in Laguna Beach, California, Foster ran an advertising agency where he worked alongside many local artists and illustrators. Through these connections, he discovered artists who wanted to share their knowledge through books, and so launched a publishing company from his home, handling every aspect of production himself, from writing and illustrating through to printing, binding, packaging and distribution. An accomplished artist in his own right, Foster created the company’s debut title, How to Draw, which went on to sell more than one million copies and remains in print to this day. Foster passed away in 1981 at the age of 90, and his books continue to be loved and used by artists around the world.
